Introduction

A large organization is a chaotic place filled with situations that seem unexplainable. Revealing the invisible forces at work will explain why these things happen. The forces become visible by understanding the hidden rules that govern corporate America. Once understood, the great thing about these rules is that you can use them to better predict future outcomes, thereby making it possible to create a winning approach at any level of the organization.

Understanding the invisible forces at work is done by applying the perspectives of block-builders, chess, and Monopoly players. Block-building is where the value for customers is created. This is where new ideas are formed, implemented, delivered, and supported. This game is about creativity. Block-builders are the product development teams and people on the front line. Chess is the infrastructure that holds the organization together. This is where policies and initiatives are defined, and future plans are made. This game is about logic and reason. Chess players are middle management and senior leaders. Executives of the company play Monopoly. This game is about power, resources, money, and big titles. It is about winning at all costs.

This book will take you inside the rules of these games and explain the motivations of the players. Typical situations that should resonate with many day-to-day challenges at work are examined. The book also looks at what happens when games collide and how to prepare for moving from one game to another. Lastly, the book touches upon how to design an organization to become successful by leveraging these games. The principles in this book will advance your career regardless of your current position as the simplicity of the concepts makes them easy to apply. Read the book and play to win!
